Eight hours in
Evey has been picked up. Next stop: gotta go get the Bub.
We've arranged a spaghetti dinner at the farm, so the food issue for tonight has been resolved.
The bath thing? Still trying to figure out if the car wash is an option.
Evey was off the charts today (which means she was really good at school), and is still happy, overall. It'll probably be tonight before she realizes that Mom's not giving her a bath, and Mom is actually NOT HERE.
She did ask me when we got home, "Is Mom on an airplane?" and I said, "Yeah, sweetie," and she just sort of frowned.
The tooth hasn't fallen out yet.
Please, please… no one get sick for the next seven days…
Three hours in
To Momma leaving for Orlando.
The realization has just set in. I feel cold. Maybe fearful. Or maybe that's the 5-Hour Energy Drink.
Questions that come to mind:
-- How often do these kids eat?
-- Is Boydee potty trained yet?
-- Can you feed a Boydee chili?
-- Does this outfit I'm wearing match at all?
-- Do I have to finish the laundry that's in the washer/dryer?
-- Do they need baths every day? Or is that a weekly thing?
-- Who is going to watch Boyd from that Godawful time of 6 a.m. until 7:30?
-- If I don't know the answers to Evey's homework, can I just make something up?
-- If that tooth falls out, do I need to leave a window cracked for the Tooth Fairy to get in?
Wow… I might be screwed.
But hey, at least the jukebox is turned up to 11. And I am chewing on a toothpick right now with no fear.
(I'm kidding. The jukebox is always on 11. I work from home, suckas!)
But mostly… we miss Momma already!!!

A win and What-a-Burger
Big news: Evey's team won their game this weekend! Seriously!
Well, Evey wasn't there... she's was sick all week, so we didn't let her play. But I did coach the game, and felt good about the timing of my time-out (when the lead was cut to 2 midway through the third quarter) and even my handling of subbing out our leading scorer with the game in hand and one minute left.
The score was 16-8 by the end. The team we played? They struggled with the same things we do, but... moreso.
***
Jessica's meatloaf for dinner tonight. Awesome! Also, hit Anthony's for dinner on Saturday night. Solid, and affordable! $35 for the four of us... and I ordered two beers and an appetizer!
***
Was in San Antonio for a few days last week. So we had What-a-Burger for dinner on Friday night. That, too, was awesome.
***
My diet? Yeah, it's going great!

The Coach and I
Enjoyed Hawk Talk with Neuty yesterday. Thanks to Judy for winning two free dinners for the show, it turned out fun! And nice to be the youngest guys in the bar in Lawrence for once...!

Weekend of 1.18.14
Another shot from this summer, this one from the T-Bones game... |
Good weekend here.
I got home from a 5-day business trip on Thursday night, so it was good to get home and see everyone.
Since Evey was so good all week, I took her to Sunfire Ceramics. We were there for two hours! I brought a book and read (Breaker Boys, about an old NFL team.) Following that, we went and met up at Tres Mexicanos with Mom, Boydee and Judy, and had dinner. That night I watched Kevin Durant score a career high (54?) against the Warriors.
Saturday we had another basketball game. It was the closest game we've had all season, losing 14-6. We took a lot of shots, but didn't make a bucket until the 3rd quarter. Evey had maybe one rebound. She led the game in most minutes played without touching the ball. Following hoops I took Evey with me to the barbershop AND Rick's, where we played some Buckhunter. We took off to meet Greg Nunn at Phoggy Dog. From there, Adrianne took Evey with her while I returned to Rick's to watch the KU/OSU game. Back home in time for dinner/bath time, then Adrianne and I watched "This is the End" with Seth Rogan, James Franco and Jonah Hill... it was decent, I laughed a few times. Most surprisingly, Adrianne watched the whole movie with me.
Sunday we went to church, then Panera (pphhhtthbbtttt) for breakfast. Adro and Evey went to volunteer (nice job!) Boydee and Judy went to the farm (cool!) while I went to help Neuty move some furniture (not bad!) Lunch with Neuty (he generously bought) at Jack's, then I came home and took the Christmas lights down, finally. It was nice out, so I didn't mind going out there. Then I came in and watched the Broncos game, where I'm reporting live now (it's the 4th quarter, looks like the Donkeys have this one.)
Random moment of the weekend: I somehow put my back out at Panera. I'm just standing there, ready to leave, and all of a sudden it started sparking and I had to grab hold of a chair.
I was able to get though moving some furniture, and through taking the lights down... but I can tell I'm going to be weak for a day or so...
Looking forward to Big Monday tomorrow night!

Billy Casper. Also, zombies. And ice cream.
Here's a pic of World Golf Hall of Famer Billy Casper and I. A gentlemen, Billy. Gave me a putting tip I think I'll take to my grave (and my putting has been strong lately.)
SOOOOO... not much to report. Evey a little sick. Bubba reported there was a monster in his room. Not good. He's enjoyed sleeping in his room somewhat. Don't want him to start being freaked out by being alone in there...
***
I watched the movie "The Last Man on Earth" the other day, starring Vincent Price (1964). Almost gave up on it... and then there was a legitimately scary part that made it worth watching. A weird ending, though. The recent Will Smith movie, "I Am Legend" is based on the same book, or screenplay. That movie also has a weird ending. I haven't seen World War Z yet, but I want to.
***
Was at a restaurant tonight, and they were closing. Eye witnessed the bartender dumping out the last remnants of the ice cream machine.
That was sad. Why not hand out a cup of ice cream to all the remaining customers, I asked?
She just laughed, like I was joking.
***
Nice W for the Jayhawks last night. Thought the Iowa State game would be tougher.
Embiid... looking TOUGH!

Breaking the third wall
Huge win for the Jayhawks. I'll admit I was way wrong about every prediction I made for this game... I emailed Greg Nunn and told him 1) We'd lose by; 10) Selden needed to get benched; 3) We wouldn't see Frankamp in anything other than mop-up time for the rest of the season.
Wrong on all three accounts. So let me add in that we will NOT win the national championship this season!
***
Did I already post this photo on the blog? I don't know. Apologies if I did. I know I published it in Golfdom and I posted it on my Twitter, as well...
That's Mario Chalmers and I. Taken this summer... back in July, according to the date stamp on the photo.
As I said on Twitter — Mario was nice, but meeting him for the first time did not go as I expected. Which means, we did not play a game of H-O-R-S-E and we did not go kill a few beers at Rick's.
But... nice.
***
So, the title of this post? I had my mind blown today when I saw Evey READING the blog! What the %*#*&%&$%???
So Evey broke the third wall today. I knew eventually the star of this blog would read the blog... but I don't know that I was ready for that (especially the day when I'm less than complimentary about her basketball performance.)
So you may note this blog suddenly becoming rated G. I don't know what to do, really. I still want to write this in my own voice, not my "daddy" voice... but we'll see.

First game of hoops for Evey
Evey's first little league basketball game was this Saturday. It was, as expected, a mess.
I'm coaching the team, 1st and 2nd graders. We had bad attendance these last two weeks with the holidays, and having to have Saturday practices. Only four of the 8 kids showed up for the last practice before our first game. That was the first practice where we worked on things like inbounding the ball, free throws, getting back on defense.
So I knew the game would come as a total shock for half the kids. I sent them out there and in the first quarter, they had no idea. Inbound the ball? What's that? That kid just scored! Now what do we do? Who am I guarding?
The kids went down 10-0 in the first quarter. I was relieved we scored 4 points in the second quarter. We made an adjustment and put one of our better kids on their scorer, and it helped. By the end of the game, we lost, but we slowed them down... I think the score was 16-8. I don't know, we may have scored 10.
At one of the breaks I told the kids, "Come on! This is a game! Go out there and hustle... act like you know what you're doing!" One of the girls said, "But I don't know what I'm doing!" So I told her to fake it.
We had practice again tonight, and 7 of the 8 kids showed up. We worked hard with some of the kids who really struggled, and I think they made some progress.
Evey? Evey is like me when I was her age... shy around the ball. She just runs up and down the court. She doesn't demand, call for, or really want the ball. It's not that she isn't having fun... she just isn't interested in making any waves out there. She had a few rebounds, not much else, in her first game. I think she took one shot all game.
Hopefully I can work with her some more in the next few practices. We have worse players on the team... she's good enough to not need extra attention immediately... but she also deserves some attention, especially from her old man.

Real men of genius
Here's to you, Bubba. You chose to wear a Spider-Girl dress at your own birthday party...
Real men of genius!
When you're eating spaghetti, it occurs to you that, hey... maybe this would be better if I smashed it in my hair.
I guess it kinda LOOKS LIKE HAIR!
When your dad is sleeping and you're wide awake at 6 a.m., you decide that your dad does want a drink of that glass of water he left on his nightstand... even though he's snoring.
Hey Dad drink this!
When your dad is making fun of your inability to poop in the potty, your mom defends you. "Tell Dad you are smart!" she says. So you look him square in the eye and say, "Dad! I am fart!"
Who farted?

Haircut Bub
This pic is from late November 2013. |
Good weekend here. Frick it's cold outside. They even cancelled school tomorrow. Trust me, Evey doesn't need to be locked up here in the house for another day... we're going to be at odds by tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Back to the point...
Mellow weekend here. Chiefs lost. Watched it with Lip and Ma'ata. Still shocked. Jayhawks lost on Sunday. Not shocked.
Made breakfast on both days. Saturday was good, Sunday was a little sketch.
Made bacon-egg-and cheese taquitos on Sunday. Something wasn't quite right on the Sunday iteration. My opinion, the kids still ate well.
Immediately after breakfast, Adro and I decided to cuddle up and watch some of our DVR'ed "Undercover Boss" in the living room. Boydee was playing with the kindle inside the cardboard Sweet Shop, Evey was playing with a new journal (with invisible ink!) she got from the Johnsons. Both kids were totally occupied.
And Adro and I just sat and watched TV at 10:30 in the morning on a Sunday, while the kids quietly played.
And that was the best moment of my weekend. Practically Heaven.

Date night w Evey
Had a good time with Evey tonight... Went to the arcade at the bowling alley to play some games, then dinner at Wayne and Larry's... Then off to the KU women's game, where I caught a T-shirt and Evey got a few player autographs.
It was cold out, but we had fun!

One down, 364 to go
First off, check out the seats I had to Monday night's game — six rows behind the KU bench! —————>

OK, we're off to a good start in 2014. I ran the dishwasher twice today, and did seven — seven — loads of laundry. And that's not just washed and dried, that's folded and put away! Special thanks to Judy for mucho mucho help on the folding!
(That 5-Hour Energy Drink I bought this morning was worth it!)
***
I replaced all 100 CDs in the jukebox over the holiday break. I'll give you the rundown of what all was pulled out soon.
***
Happy New Year!
