How you doin'?

Evey and my pops, here.

I have a post I wanna write re: Roger Clemens. I'll save it for another night,

Meanwhile, me and Sean Lipford won trivia at a Tanner's tonight... that earned us $35. It was just the two of us, in second place, a team of 10. One of the correct answers was "Annie Hall," so yeah, even my wife will be proud (I hope). Next week we get to play in the quarter finals.

Friday: I take the day off to......

Kid's meals

I asked aloud the other day, "How old do you think Evey will be when we buy her her first kid's meal?"

See, up to this point, we had ordered food where we could share our meals with Evelyn and she'd have a solid meal. But then, something snuck up on us... Evey keeps getting bigger and bigger, as does her appetite.

I think I guessed she'd be 2, maybe a little older, when we ordered her her first kid's meal.

Barely a few weeks later, I found us ordering her a kid's meal. It happened last weekend while we were in Wichita. Her first kid's meal was a Sonic Wacky Pack grilled cheese sandwich and milk. She was 14-months-old.

That was for lunch. For dinner, we found ourselves at Chili's, where we ordered her the kids mac and cheese.

So, in my mind, this is so cool, because guess what? More food for me. And every once in a while, a cool toy.

Idiot. It's also more money outta my pocket!

Oh well, she's worth it. We have fun with the kids meals when we're out to eat. This last weekend we were in Topeka (at Baby Depot, natch) and afterwards we went to Ruby Tuesday's or T.G.I. Friday's, one of the weekdays, I'm not sure which one, and we ordered her the kid's chicken tenders and mashed potatoes. Poor Evey had to fight for those mashed potatoes... they were really good!

So, now I know... only 14-months-old, but costing me an extra $5 or $6 when we go out to eat.

Saturday Night Live

So, it's Saturday night. What am I doing? Why, I'm making refried beans. And working on freelance stories. And watching college basketball. And downloading the Black Lips. And drinking various rums in my Coke.

What are you doing?

  • This post fueled by a rum my brother-in-law brought me back from St. Lucia. Thank you, Mark, that really was good stuff (Bounty).

  • Note to my city league basketball team: bad officiating is at all levels. Take the college scene today. Yeah, they let one guy shoot 20 free throws against KU, but what was really awful was that 5-second call against Rush. Whoa! And in the Memphis/Tennessee game, there were several bad calls, the worst of which was a Tennessee player cutting off his defender's drive by moving his feet, and they whistled Tenn for the touch foul. Good D rewarded with a foul. Frustrating.

  • Yeah, Trav, I didn't answer your call tonight. I was too pissed off to talk to an Okie Stater immediately after the game. You understand.

  • You know, my wife is funny. She's shy, too, so I feel the need to let people know, that my wife is really capable of some solid humor, it's just that the general public doesn't get to see it very often. Tonight's one-liner: I walk into the bedroom to say goodnight to her and Evey wearing the jacket pictured. Adrianne says good night, then she asks me, "Are you going somewhere? ...Like 1980?"

  • You should check this out: http://www.rorrimkcalb.com/arcadefire.html It's Arcade Fire's "Black Mirror," where you can remix it a little bit by dropping certain ingredients from the song. I suggest rocking the song out with 1, 2 and 6. Despite what Rolling Stone said, this song is great because of the drums.
  • Hey, I need some of my guy friends to advise: Should I watch Platoon? It was on Starz tonight... I remember the suicide scene really freaking me out as an 11-year-old... and I never finished it for that reason. But the cast looks great. Let me know if I should try it... also, let me know if any women or children are brutally murdered, because that freaks me out too.

  • It snowed tonight.

More later, as it comes to me.

Bigfoot poll a big sham?

LAWRENCE, KAN. -- In a stunning turn of events, electoral officers are calling the recent http://www.especiallyevey.blogspot.com/ poll, "a sham," "a farce," and "downright $*%#!"

"It's apparent that we had one person casting multiple votes," said Cindy Lowe, Vice President of the Just One Vote Per Person Council based in Manassas, Va. "The finally tally showing Bigfoot as the victor over Seth Jones? I'd say that's about as legit as most Bigfoot sightings."

On Wednesday an anonymous tip was sent to the EspeciallyEvey offices in Lawrence, Kan. The tip stated that one of the voters, a Lawrence teacher, may have utilized the school library computers to vote as many as nine times for the bipedaled Bigfoot.

The motive? An abnormal affection for the mythical monster.

"She claims to have been kidnapped by Bigfoot a few years ago while in Colorado," the source, on a strict condition of anonymity, said. "She's been a big Bigfoot fan ever since. Some even speculate that she may have married her husband because of his slight resemblance to Bigfoot. He's hairy; grunts a lot. It's crazy, but at least it kind of explains what she sees in this guy."

Indeed, can a person have Stockholm Syndrome for a creature that may not exist? As unlikely as that sounds, it would at least explain what appeared to be a stunning upset for local Lawrence legend Seth Jones.

"Whoo! I'm back, baby," an elated Jones said from his personalized seat at Rick's in Lawrence. "Do you want my autograph?"

Golf legend Greg Norman, when reached at his multi-million dollar ranch in Colorado, was sure that the election was tainted.

"I've suffered some major losses in my career, but none may have burned as badly as not winning this poll on EspeciallyEvey," Norman said. "To get news that the election may have been rigged... well, let's just say that the Shark smells the blood in the water on this one, folks."

On the trail of a big story

No time to post right now... I'm trying to gather the facts of a possible case of voter fraud at especiallyevey... Did Bigfoot win fair? Stay tuned!!!

Suck it, Norman!!!

Thanks to everyone who voted in our most recent poll. BIGFOOT barely beat out Seth Jones for the photo Evey would be most proud of in 30 years, by a score of 9 votes to 6. Tennis hall of famer Chris Evert managed a solitary vote. But Greg Norman, the Great White Shark, hall of fame golfer, was totally shut out.
No love for the Shark?
Bigfoot yes, Shark no. And that's the way it is.
Photo is of Evey in a mall rental stroller, turning around and flashing a big smile at her dad as they walked through the mall in Wichita.

The Nunn Twins!

We're back from our weekend down in Wichita... one of the highlights was stopping by Greg's house to see his and Adrienne's dynamic duo, Henry and Liam.
Henry is on my left, Liam on my right. They're four months old now. Adrianne's already chosen Liam as her favorite, not sure why. I've got $1 placed on Liam to win the first fight between the two brothers, so hopefully it has something to do with his potential as a kickboxer.

Adrianne asked Adrienne if the twins were always this good? It reminded me of people asking us the same thing about Evey when she was four-months-old. But it's even more impressive because there's TWO of these boys, and they're both so amazingly happy... it made the thought of twins not seems so scary! Heck, I was able to hold both of them for about 15 minutes and neither one of them protested even a little.

Busy times, but certainly fun times.

Back to work tomorrow (Tuesday) we took today off to get some things done around the house.

At Mom and Dad's for the weekend!

Mom's spaghetti for dinner tonight! If you don't hate me right now, you should!

And check out Evey and Adro napping with my parent's dog, Sammy.

Last day at GCSAA for Bart!

We're celebrating at Peking Taste, noon, if you care to join us.

I asked Bart what he'd miss about GCSAA. He said, "Definitely not the $&#*@ toilet paper!!! That stuff is like sand paper!"

OK, that's a made-up quote. But he might actually say that.

Evey's Valentine

Another Valentine's Day is here... and with it... another Valentine from that baby Grey kid.
I have to admit... he's pretty charming.
Too bad that means Evey just gets grounded for an additional week.

The Rooster

I was going to dub this post, "Flock of Seagulls," but then I Googled that name, and saw that not one of those jerks had a haircut that came close to this... so we're going with "The Rooster."
Alice in Chains songs are way cooler anyway...
OK, bummer about the KU game tonight. Someone tell the guards that there's time left to impress us; they don't have to drive against three guys every play to impress me.
I know the Lawrence Journal-World covers KU basketball ad nauseam, but does that mean they need all those... (looking for a word better than 'g*y'...) pretentious... studio photos for their coverage? I'd take game photos any day.
It's cold out. It really is.
There was another shooting at the Last Call in Lawrence Saturday night (Sunday morning). It's too bad this business can't contain its customers, and somehow keep them from shooting at each other. I would advise them to allow less Maker's Mark whiskey through the door, because that stuff really does make you angry. And people wonder why there was a 15-year-old there... well, they don't serve alcohol anymore, their liquor license was taken away. No liquor license, now they can have minors in there at all hours of the night. Maybe the Last Call is really an angry daycare now, for all I know.
Regardless, it's a shame to see people shooting guns at each other in Lawrence.
Last thought before I sign off for the night... check out that meat paw on Evelyn. Yeah, I know, the crazy hair is distracting. But the really crazy thing is the size of that hand. This girl will probably dunk, just like her daddy*.
(*She'll probably dunk like her daddy, except for the part where she falls and breaks her arm.)
((By the way, the spell check function on blogger doesn't work anymore, so hopefully I spelled such words as 'nauseam' and 'liquor' correctly... that's what I hpe, at leats.))

Evey at the airport

We had to endure a 2-hour delay at KCI two weeks ago. As mad as everyone was, they still smiled whenever Evey be-bopped by...

We're home sick today. Evey's got a fever and a cough. She also getting a buncha teeth right now, too. So we're not ourselves right now, nor are we sleeping much!

I'm too tired

To say much of anything right now. Except that our basketball team won tonight. I was 1-2 from the field, 0-1 from the line. And I felt like I was going to throw up a burrito during most of the game.

I'll have more posts next week. I'm really looking forward to this weekend to relax, chill out, and recharge my batteries.

In the meantime, some good news on the work front: GCM blog has over 7,000 readers in 7 days

Oh, and click here for some information regarding O.E.G.P.

UPDATE: Here's a link to a story by Will Baxter.

Evey and Greg Norman, Chris Evert

I somehow knew that I'd be able to introduce Evey to Greg Norman. Chris Evert was an unexpected bonus.
Evey was semi-amused by her first celebrities. I told her to ask for a scholarship, but all she could muster was "ball!"

1 fish, 2 fish

This was our third and last ride at Universal's Island of Adventure. Here's how it broke down for Evey:
Merry-Go-Round -- Loved watching it the most. Riding it was OK, a little unusual... but she had a smile on her face.
The Flying Fishys -- She was a little bit spooked, but she did OK. While she wasn't laughing, she wasn't crying either. (We're sitting in the fish on the third photo in the previous post.)
The Cat in the Hat -- This was a tilt-a-whirl crossed with a narrative. As the car drove down a track, occasionally spinning, we saw The Cat in the Hat scenes pop out from displays on the walls. I did my best to laugh at everything I saw, to try to imply to Evey, "This is funny, so we're having fun." But really, it was a little too much for Evey. (We're about to begin the ride in the above photo.) Did she cry? Squirm? Frown? No. But I'm pretty sure the look she gave us at the conclusion of the ride meant "What the hell was THAT shit?" Me and Adro were glad to get off this ride, that's for sure. I don't think Evey was itching to get back in line, either. As our car pulled off to begin the ride, a father saw me and he leaned over and told me in a panicked voice, "You need to hold her! It's going to spin!" I was already holding on to her, but now I had her in a vise-grip... we were rigourously spun around right off the bat. Like I said, no tears or anything, but I'm pretty sure Evey would have enjoyed watching the Merry-go-Round for another couple spins rather than going on spins herself.
Oh, and the Spider-Man ride? It was AWESOME. The girls let me go by myself on that one. WOW. You wear 3-D glasses. I don't know how they do it, but you really feel like the car you're in is flying around 100 stories in the air, and then you're dropped. And Spidey and all the villains keep ending up on the hood of your car, and you'd swear one of them is going to reach out and touch you. Great, great ride.

Back from Orlando!

And we're very, very happy to be home. More photos from our work/vacation this week... including Evey with a couple celebrities...
